Colonno, Lake Como: A Corner Of Quiet Beauty Between A Wild Waterfall, Pretty Fishermen Houses, And The Greenway Trail [Infographic]
Colonno in Lake Como is an old fishermen village that stands between the highly desirable amenities of Tremezzina and the elegant vibe of the so called "primo bacino" of the lake, i.e. the stretch of coast from Como to Argegno.
So this little village stands somehow in the middle, as if it was suspended in a quiet dream on the slopes of Monte Costolone.
We like to say that Colonno is like an old painting: peaceful, not touristy at all, where people seem to live at a slower pace.
Mainly known for the Greenway path, that starts right here from Via Luigi Civetta, Colonno boasts a romantic old town - still with a medieval layout - with traditional porches, narrow and dark alleys, a public beach, and a couple of cafés.
What else to "unplug" from your ordinary life?
If you want a wider selection of restaurants, wineries and pubs, all you have to do is to drive for 2 minutes to Argegno, the neighboring village in the direction of Como.
Alternatively, in the opposite direction towards Menaggio, in 10 minutes you can get to Lenno, another hotspot full of services and amenities.
In the old town of Colonno you’ll find a cute little house built inside the bridge over Torrente Pessetta, the so called “Casa Ponte”: don’t you believe? Have a look!
But there’s more. Colonno boasts an impressive waterfall, Cascata delle Camogge, that gets amazingly wild and fierce when it rains a lot, especially in Spring or Fall: that’s when it’s likely to see some of its water skimming the edge of the road below. You can spot it from Strada Regina when you drive along the coast at the entrance of the village, coming from Como.
If you want to get a closer look at this spectacular waterfall, that’s feasible (but not when it’s pouring, be careful!): from Via Cappella in the old town of Colonno, just proceed through an uphill staircase until you reach a little bridge. From here you’ll be able to see a romantic little valley where the water gather before jumping into the lake with a last dive.
Another tip: if you like hiking, be sure not to miss Alpe di Colonno: you’ll find a lovely Rifugio (with plenty of delicious local cult cuts and cheese and honey and polenta and pizzoccheri etc.) and a spectacular old hamlet called Corniga, that has been surviving over the centuries keeping its stone houses pretty much immaculate.
Our tip to approach Colonno is to take your time to explore its old town at your own pace, with no rush, soaking up its timeless vibe.
Take it slow and breathe the peace of a village where time has stopped!
