San Siro And Its 19 Hamlets: A Treasure Hunt Between Roman Forts And Castles [Infographic]
Let’s go on with our exploration of Lake Como with the help of our handy Towns Guides!
Today we keep discovering the west coast with the village of San Siro.
San Siro, at less than 10 minutes from Menaggio, is a vibrant kaleidoscope made of 19 little hamlets (“frazioni”), all with their own strong, timeless identity.
Some of these villages arise along the ancient Regina road in the vicinity of the lake, while others are scattered along the ridge of Monte Bregagno in a breathtaking scenery: you'll find just a handful of stone houses, old wash houses, cobbled alleys, fountains, tiny squares, and picturesque churches.
Walking along the paths which lead from one hamlet to another is a good way to see unique ancient buildings and to enjoy lovely views of natural scenery. The carriage road which leads from Santa Maria to the higher hamlets and to “i monti” (formerly mountain pastures) offers 7 km of wonderful views of the lake.
Like many other villages along the shores of Lake Como, San Siro has roman origins: consider that an ancient stone marker dedicated to the god Neptune has been found right here. But it’s not all: some mysterious rock inscriptions have been found in the woody areas between Roncate, Soriano and Vezzedo di Cremia. They belong to an ancient, unknown past and they’re are still being examined by experts of local history.
Take your time to discover all of these 19 hamlets: the fishermen’s houses in Rezzonico; Lucena with its tiny square that looks like a book illustration; Gallio with its i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e view over the Y-shape of Lake Como; Acquaseria with its S. Abbondio church, apparently one of the oldest places of worship in the region; and the list goes on and on.
We look forward to hearing your impressions once you’ll have visited all of the magical corners scattered around San Siro!
