All About The Bus System at Lake Como
The bus is definitely the cheapest way to explore Lake Como!
Let’s have a deeper look at the specific bus systems on each branch of the lake.
BUSES ON THE COMO BRANCH
The company handling the bus service on the western shore is called ASF Autolinee.
The two main bus stops in Como city are just in front of the main railway stations (so ideally where you arrive if you are traveling from Milan): the main “Stazione Autolinee” is in front of Como Nord Lago; the other stop is in front of Como San Giovanni station (here you can easily buy the ticket at the newsstand).
If you want to travel from Como city up to the central and northern area of the lake (where most of the local amenities are), you just have to look for the C10 bus (direction: Como-Menaggio-Colico).
The timetable varies depending on seasons, workdays and weekends, so pay attention to check everything at the official website or simply asking to the front office desk in Como (Stazione Autolinee).
The C10 bus takes approximately 15’ from Como to Cernobbio, 40’ to Argegno and 1 hour to Menaggio.
Another bus you could be interested to is the C30 one (direction: Como-Nesso-Bellagio), as it leads to the picturesque towns of Torno (with its amazing Villa Pliniana), Faggeto Lario (with its old press in Palanzo, dating back to XVIth century!), Nesso (with its iconic bridge featured in Hitchcock movie), and the internationally known Bellagio. Four very special towns that you can’t definitely miss during your Lake Como trip!
ASF Autolinee has recently released an app “Arriva ASF” that you can download here, both for Android and iOs.
During the summer months, especially in the weekends, you can face a remarkable traffic in the Tremezzina stretch of coast, so be prepared to some minutes stuck in the traffic!
But no panic, the windows of the bus are wide and if you take seat on the right side you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lakeside villages.
BUSES ON THE LECCO BRANCH
The eastern shore has two companies managing the bus lines: Linee Lecco (which covers the metropolitan area of Lecco; see the summer timetables here) and SAB Lecco, which connects towns on the eastern side of this coast.
The most popular buses, here, are the D10 (Lecco-Bellagio, with the bus station just outside the train station in Lecco), the D20 (Lecco-Mandello) and the D21 (Bellano-Varenna).
You can buy tickets in all newstands and tobacco shops; remember that if you buy the tickets onboard, you’ll pay something more.
